WTN: Light Spanish Lovelies

I don't drink a lot of Spanish wine. But when in a Spanish restaurant with a great list, the direction is obvious.

Started with the 2014 Do Ferreiro Rias Baixas Albariño which had such fragrant refreshing grip, perfect for so many dishes and helped along by a sturdier ripeness than may be common for the wine. Later the 2015 Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina Rubentis was delightful almost-effervescent pink Muscadet (to put it in terms my brain/palate can understand).

Fun!

Thanks.

I cannot recall the last time I enjoyed an Albarino.

I don't drink a lot either. They also make a very old vine cuvée that should be more interesting, and it was also on the menu so I was close to ordering it last night. But it was close to $100 (as opposed to $40 something for the regular cuvée) so I exercised restraint on behalf of my non wine geek companions.

While a lot of Albarino can be overcropped plonk, in good hands it's a delicious variety. Under $100 isn't a bad restaurant price for the Cepas Velas, but understand if you aren't with wine people.
Basically every geek I know likes the Ameztoi pink, but I was unimpressed the couple times I tried. Not recent, and I should try again

Yeah, I can see being unimpressed. Especially depending on the circumstances. In general, I like the Ameztoi wines and am happy to drink them in casual social situations like last night where I want something crisp and refreshing with a bit of character. Fun. But hardly a wine to ponder and I never buy them for drinking at home, where I generally want something a bit more impressive.

The Do Ferreiro is my go to Albarino at home, always pleases.

Lou has served us the Do Ferreiro many times over the years. And I agree with him: it's definitely the go-to for that variety. The Cepas Velas is a remarkably tasty wine, deep, mineral, and taught with tension.

If you google you should be able to find some interesting pics of the owner of the property standing in the Cepas Velas vineyard. He is a fairly large fellow, yet he is dwarfed by the pergola-trellised old vines. Close to the ground they look more like tree trunks.

Ditto. One of my good wine friends is crazy-nuts about it, so I get to taste it now and then and invariably I think--soda pop. I've had other Txakolinas that impressed more.

Licia Albarino is my favorite Albarino. It's a project of Winebow and Jose Limeres.
