Enfield Wine Co. 2013 Wild Horse Valley Chardonnay, Heron Lake Vineyard. 13.3% abv. Wild Horse Valley is just a bit east of the town of Napa, and gets some marine influence from the Bay. This has neither the fierce mineral cut of a Chablis nor the weight and texture of (what I still think of as) a typical California Chardonnay. Instead, it's very much its own thing: ripe apple and musk-melon edged with grapefruit peel, with a long, surprisingly gentle finish, barely touched by oak, walking a nice line between richness and restraint, and leaving a mouth-watering sea-spray aftertaste. Excellent balance, and would probably do very interesting things over five to eight years. Nice match with the meal -- nettle gnocchi with a light cream sauce infused with what were probably the last of this season's morels.
