WTN: Enfield Chardonnay

by Patchen Markell » Sat May 27, 2017 8:50 pm

Enfield Wine Co. 2013 Wild Horse Valley Chardonnay, Heron Lake Vineyard. 13.3% abv. Wild Horse Valley is just a bit east of the town of Napa, and gets some marine influence from the Bay. This has neither the fierce mineral cut of a Chablis nor the weight and texture of (what I still think of as) a typical California Chardonnay. Instead, it's very much its own thing: ripe apple and musk-melon edged with grapefruit peel, with a long, surprisingly gentle finish, barely touched by oak, walking a nice line between richness and restraint, and leaving a mouth-watering sea-spray aftertaste. Excellent balance, and would probably do very interesting things over five to eight years. Nice match with the meal -- nettle gnocchi with a light cream sauce infused with what were probably the last of this season's morels.

Yes! I remain fascinated with John's Chardonnay. It's a completely unique wine in the range of California Chardonnay.

Yes, it's remarkable how recognizably Californian it is, while also being unrecognizable.

I've just gotten on the mailing list.

Welcome to my world. Been following Enfield from the very start. Beat Tom Hill on this one.
