WTN: Coteaux Bourgignons

by Patchen Markell » Mon Jun 05, 2017 11:57 am

Domaine Huber-Verdereau 2015 Côteaux Bourgignons, "Les Chanterelles," Cuvée No. 1. $22. I'm not sure how the newish Côteaux Bourgignons AOC relates to Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, but this, too, is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay. I was expecting something brisk, bright, and light, but perhaps because of the warm year, this turns out to have way more oomph than I anticipated. A bit of reduction on the nose, then deep plum and ripe black cherry fruit; seems surprisingly extracted, with slightly raspy tannins, and not all the elements are connected. It's a bit of a big, jumpy, sloppy dog of a wine, whose wagging tail seems like it might knock over that vase at any second, but it's not bad. I'd try it again in a different vintage.

And now, off to Berlin for a week. Auf Wiedersehen!
cheers, Patchen

I think Coteaux Bourgignons replaced Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire. So can use PN, Gamay, or Cesar for reds, can be from anywhere in Burgundy (including Beaujolais)., etc. It's basically the kitchen sink appellation!

Plenty of other things to drink in Berlin!

In fact, along your lines, was just reading this article about the local cocktail scene:

Right - it was the BGO replacement. But, as with BGO and PTG, get one from a good producer and it will probably be decent stuff. Had a Côteaux Bourginons from Jean Grivot last weekend. Tasted like a proper Burgundy. Intense, nicely aromatic, and perhaps a hint of farmyard. Was told it was 100% Gamay. Not particularly cheap though - around £25.

Oh, it certainly wasn't awful, just not what I was expecting. I've had much worse US$22 wines.

Thanks for the NYT link, Rahsaan -- I saw that story too. Last night was Spargel and Pils but we'll see what the week brings! I'm sort of stuck down in Dahlem for a few nights, but may be able to do cocktails Saturday-Sunday.

Hoke: just because I live in Chicago doesn't mean I drink Old Style while sunning myself at Wrigley. But if I should HAPPEN to find myself in one of those beach chairs am Spree-Ufer, maybe I'll have something syrupy. ;-)

FU?

Sure, not the most happening area. But it's a city, and you can always strike at delicious beverages.

You probably have your own itinerary, but this craft beer beer garden (http://www.stonebrewing.eu/) opened last year as we were leaving Berlin. It's not right next to you, but somewhat southern and looks interesting, so we will try to check it out this summer when we're based in Friedenau.

And if you're looking for bottles, these folks http://www.weinundglas.com/ are one of the old classic shops with an exhaustive selection, and potentially a straight shot from you on the u-bahn.

Actually, I spent a couple of hours today walking around Dahlem with a (probably) octogenarian colleague and alum of the FU (notice how I resisted the low-hanging pun there) whose grandparents built a house in the neighborhood a few years before WW1. I couldn't have asked for a more interesting introduction to the area. And had quite decent Kerner with my Spargel tonight ('tis the season). That after five hours wandering around the central city yesterday. No complaints!
cheers, Patchen
