WTN: Camillo Ciliegiolo Maremma '13...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jun 27, 2017 1:29 pm

Found this at Enoteca Vino Nostro & thought I'd take it for a test drive:
1. AntonioCamillo Ciliegiolo Vigna Vallerana Alta DOC: Maremma Toscana (13.5%; ToscoWineImports) Poggioatgentiera/Banditella di Alberese 2013: Very dark color; bit earthy/dusty bit black cherry cola/cherry/Sangio-like/spicy some Chianti-like quite interesting if a bit rustic nose; rather soft slight tangy/metallic light black cherry/cola/Sangio-like some earthy/dusty bit rustic/coarse flavor w/ modest rough/tangy tannins; long bit tangy/metallic/earthy/dusty light cherry/black cherry cola/Sangio-like somewhat rough/rustic finish w/ some rough/coarse tannins; reminds some of an earthy/rustic Chianti; rather interesting but nothing compelling here. $28.00 (EVN)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Ciliegiolo: This grape variety is mostly found in Tuscany, and Marema, not so much in Umbria. It is one
of the parents of Sangiovese. It was introduced in Tuscany from Spain, though it has no relation to any
grape varieties now present in Spain. It is seldom bttld as a mono-varietal, most used in blends for
the bright cherry character it contributes.
GeorgeUnti has a bit of this planted in Calif. This is only the 3'rd Ciliegiolo that I've tried. No compelling evidence that it should be being planted all up&down the Coast in Calif.
