WTN: glorious Sommerberg

by Patchen Markell » Fri Jul 07, 2017 10:53 pm

For Andrea's birthday, we took a bottle of Albert Boxler 2002 Alsace Riesling, Grand Cru "Sommerberg," L31E to an outstanding local BYO (Ruxbin). Terrific showing. At first, the nose was classic but the palate was reticent, showing sharp green-apple and citrus flavors and bitter fruit-skin on the finish; but within fifteen or twenty minutes, the palate uncoiled and the wine just kept getting better until it was gone. Lively, bright, not heavy, richly flavored green and golden apple, lime cordial, intense minerality, and a touch of petrol, all arranged into a seamlessly unfolding whole. Just barely shy of fully dry. We have one left; this was a good enough showing that we won't feel compelled to wait, but there's no big hurry either, I don't think. Happy birthday Andrea, indeed!
cheers, Patchen

Great when it all works out like that.
