Forlorn Hope Saint Laurent

by Brian K Miller » Mon Jul 10, 2017 11:21 am

Fascinating wine. Definitely some "Pinosity" here-plum fruit, cranberry, pomegranate. Underlain by some delicious earthiness...almost funkiness. A very fun tasting at the new Outlands tasting room in Downtown Napa!

Given my increasing...disappointment? lack of interest? in Clos Du Val wines, I am switching over. I like all three wineries at Outlands (Poe, Forlorn Hope and Farella) and the people involved are excellent. CdV seems to be trying to go upscale. I have just not found their latest lineup very interesting under the new winemaking regime? Plus, the one woman was downright annoying in pushing the "appointment" thing.

I was Outland's first wine club member! The manager gave me a bottle of Poe Manchester Ridge Pinot, which my friends and I had for dinner. (Outstanding)!

If you are in Downtown Napa, hunt down Outlands. Good stuff!

This would be the latest 2015, Brian? I think Matt's StL is a pretty good at showing that earthy/loamy character
you find in good StL from the Burgenland.
When I was in the Burgenland last Fall, I took a bttl of the '14 to gift to HannesSchuster, of RosiSchuster; one of the
best StL and BlauFrankisch in the Burgenland. He finally tasted it a few weeks ago and like it.

Hi Tom

I hope you can remember me…you visited me for a short time during the harvest last year!
You gave me a bottle of an Californian Sankt Laurent from Forlorn Hope!
I promised you that I will try this wine after the harvest….but I took a little bit more time!!!

THANKS!!!! for this very nice Sankt Laurent!!! I liked it a lot!! Very fine, elegant and pure thats the
way we like it….

Best regards also to Matthew Rorick

Tom: Yes. Current release.

Very nice that your Austrian friend was able to enjoy the California version.

I am a big fan of Sankt Laurent, actually! :) For the reasons you list. And Matt seems to nail almost all of his "forlorn hopes" pretty well! (The tasting had a great Carignan as well, "The Kerrigans" )

NotYet tried his new Carrignan. Had his latest PicpoulBlanc last week and was mightly impressed. As good, maybe
better, than my gold standard for US Picpoul, TablasCreek.
Funny story: The StLaurent comes from the RicciVnyd in the southern reaches of the Carneros. In the 2'nd (or 3'rd) vintage
of StL from Ricci, Matt was unable to make one. Somebody had come in in the dead of night and stole the grapes from that
vnyd. It's not a big vnyd. Imagine the disappointment of that guy who prolly thought he was stealing primo Carneros
PinotNoir and, when he made the wine, got the earthy sort of wine he did!!

Wow. I know Carneros is isolated in some sections, but shocking that someone could sneak in like that!

Glad to hear another positive verdict on the 2015, Brian -- the 2014 St.-Laurent was my favorite Forlorn Hope so far, so I'll definitely be looking for the new vintage! And thanks for the hint on Outlands. I'll look it up next time we're out that way.
cheers, Patchen
