WTN: Tribute to the Tributaries

by Rahsaan » Sat Jul 15, 2017 4:51 pm

2016 Falkenstein Oberemmeler Karlsberg Riesling Kabinett
Refreshing salty and brisk, but with a juicy core and the lovely lemon drop ripe succulence in the middle adds a nice dimension. Very nice and very fun, if not profound. Perhaps not a regal high-level vineyard, and perhaps not a kabinett stacked for aging. (But what do I know, feel free to tell me I’m wrong) Regardless, it is definitely fresh fun wine for drinking now. Preferably before and during dinner. Maybe even outside on a warm day!

2015 Ludwig Breiling Mertersdorfer Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett
Juicy fresh firm and decently fine. All the right pieces and a very lovely wine. No sparks, but certainly worth drinking. Especially if it’s a meal where contemplation is not required.

2015 von Hövel Hütte Oberemmel Riesling Kabinett
Very verdant yet also deeper and thicker than the Breiling. Much more material to work through here. But now is not the time. Closed down and the least expressive of these three.

Things keep getting better at Falkenstein.

I don't have a long history with the wines, but from my initial explorations they are easier to like than Lauer. Similar dry-ish Saar interpretations but somehow the Lauer wines never seem to click for me, while Falkenstein is hard to stop drinking!

On Bob's point, sorry to hear about limited 2015s, there were certainly so many lovely wines. Although my local Berlin Falkenstein-pusher was much more bullish about 2016 (as opposed to 2015) in the Saar, more reflective of the Saar sensibilities and all. I can't say much globally, but will definitely be drinking more Falkenstein.

Glad I am not the only one who can't quite seem to get in sync with Lauer.
