WTN: sometimes simpler is better

by Patchen Markell » Thu Aug 03, 2017 11:13 am

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg 2014 Bourgogne. (Apparently from vines that used to be considered village Vosne-Romanée prior to 1936). This is really nice basic Bourgogne: bright, suave, red fruit with good concentration and excellent balance, leans more pretty than sauvage, only the barest suggestion of wood spice. Happy, expressive wine that goes very well with a diverse palate of flavors in our meal -- and, even at a fine-dining markup, doesn't break the bank. This is the second excellent bottle from this domaine we've had recommended to us by this particular somm (who also had pictures from his visit to the property on his phone). It could easily turn into a habit.

Ah, the domaine has a very nice map on their website; looks like it's from a site called "Les Lutinières" that's just east of the AOC boundary, next to Au-Dessus de la Rivière.

My favorite producer in Burgundy.

I try (and usually fail) to get at least 6 bottles of the Bourgogne every year. I succeeded in 2014. I have had one so far, and your note is spot on. The 2014 Vosne Villages is really nice, but starting to get more than a little pricey. to me it's worth it. After that it's a bottle here and a bottle there due to pricing.

I can't remember what the other bottle was; I think maybe a 1er NSG of some kind. I've never seen it offered at retail around here, though clearly someone is distributing it. I'll have to make some inquiries.

M-G is now generally FOS (Friend of Shop) allocated. The NSG was either Chaignots or Vignes Rondes.

Definitely Chaignots then, as I'm sure I've never had a Vignes Rondes.

Like I said, I'll make some inquiries. I might be a FOS, though maybe I'm just a PITA. ;-)
cheers, Patchen
