Betsy had a concert Mon night at Mohonk Mountain House, I did some light hiking during rehearsal, skipped wine with dinner, enjoyed concert (Ravel, Mendelssohn , Borodin). Tuesday some hiking, canoeing, and napping, then dinner in the more formal room. I started with sea scallops with a coconut/basil/lemongrass sauce, while Betsy had a salad. Her main was tagliatelle with clams and shrimp; mine was roast chicken with trumpet mushrooms. Wine was the 2015 Domaine de la Chapelle “Grands Climats” Pouilly-Fuisse. More Cote d’Or than Macon, just a touch of vanilla/oak, reach pear and citrus fruit. Vibrant acids, good length. Young and bright. B+
(list is fairly varied but not geeky, nothing exciting, but saw reasonable Vouvray, Rioja, CA options. Prices aren’t too bad- 2-2.5x retail, this was $55 -plus 15% service, but as I usually tip 20+, didn’t mind).
Back home Wednesday, thunderstorm cancelled our picnic. Betsy made a duck breast, purslane, and grape salad. Opened the 2014 Enderle & Moll “Liason” Pinot Noir (Baden). Spicy red fruit (raspberry and cherry), high acid, incense and earth. Fun. B+
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
