Not Trimbach or Zind Humbrecht

One final hint: I know of at least two books popular with oenophiles that contain a picture of this producer's label, although not necessarily the label for this wine.

Okay, no one got the producer, so I'll give it to you:

The wine was a 2004 Schoffit Pinot Blanc Auxerrois "Vieilles Vignes," Alsace.

BTW, the books I mentioned with Schoffit label pictures were Oz Clarke's Encyclopedia of Grapes (under Pinot Blanc) and the World Atlas of Wine 5th ed. (under Alsace). The importer that convinced me this would be a worthwhile buy was Weygandt-Metzler.

Ian got the vintage, Alsace, and Pinot Blanc, so he's the winner.

Based on this experience, I think Pinot Blanc is an underrated grape. Sure, it will never be a standout on its own. However, I think it works well with nearly any mildy flavored food.

Andrew
Yes, somehow Alsace gets a poor look-in for me normally, barring an occasional riesling. A shame as I'd had a reasonable return on the wines I've tried. Must try a few more of the other varietals (excepting Gewurz, which tastes like I imagine a tarts boudouir tastes like  )
regards
Ian
