WTN: 2004 Escarpment Martinborough Pinot Noir (NZ)

by Anders Källberg » Sat Jan 20, 2007 4:36 pm

This wine really has everything one looks for in a premium New Zealand Pinot Noir.
Deep purple colour.
A wonderfully charming and aromatic nose with loads of pure, red fruits, such as strawberries and pomegranate, plus that extra depth and a slight meatiness that one finds in the Martinborough Pinots. Maybe also a slight whiff of sea shore. Maximum Pinosity in short and just soo seductive!
A refreshing taste with a mouthwatering, juicy acidity, great depth of fruit and soft, almost furry tannins. Good concentration and depth. Long, fresh and chewable, slightly bitter aftertaste.
A great wine and a great example of the great Pinots New Zealand is capable of producing nowadays, in this case in the skilled hands of Larry McKenna.

Cheers from a beautifully white Stockholm, with more snow falling as I write,
Anders

Anders
Thanks for this. I'm likely to buy one of these soon, as I liked Martinborough Vineyard Pinot when he was there (I still like it in vintages after he left as well). The price still seems very competitive.

I can only agree with you, Ian. I wish I could buy some more, but there are none available here at present. The price In Sweden was about 25 Euro. How much is it in the UK?

Hi Anders,
Does the Kupe by Escarpment get to Sweden. This is really really good. Only one has been released so far - 2003 vintage.

The Escarpment (standard bottling) seems to come in at between 10 and 15 pounds. Just bought 2 bottles of the Martinborough Vineyards 2003 Pinot Noir for £15 each, which I'm pretty happy about for a price.

Haven't seen it here, Sue, I'm sorry to say. Is Kupe their premium Pinot? Even this, "regular" cuvée has not been available in the monopoly stores. I managed to obtain a pair of bottles from a frined with the right contacts... We discovered Escarpment at the New Zealand Day that was held here last year. It was in fact Nigel Greening of Felton Road who pointed them out for us(!)

Yes, the premium bottling. If you ever do see it, then I hope you get the opportunity to taste it.
Cheers,
Sue
