WTN: Ojai Syrah BienNacido '01...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Aug 16, 2017 11:48 am

Needing a red last night, I cracked:
1. OjaiVnyd Syrah BienNacidoVnyd/SantaBarbaraCnty (14.0%) 2001: Very dark color w/ no bricking; strong pungent/toasty/Fr.oak some black pepper some Rhonish/smokey/smoked meats rather black cherry/blackberry/Syrah quite complex classic Ojai Syrah nose; rather tart/hard strong smokey/charred/Fr.oak somewhat peppery/black pepper strong Syrah/black cherry/blackberry slight earthy/graphite/Rhonish/smoked meats rather complex flavor w/ modest smooth/bit astringent tannins; very long/lingering bit hard/drying structured very strong blackberry/black cherry/Syrah some peppery/Rhonish/espresso/smoked meats some toasty/charred/oak rather complex/Rhonish finish w/ some smooth/ripe/hard tannins; a classic fully-mature Ojai Syrah maybe a bit past its prime.

Seems like it had a good run.

Struggling to understand smooth/ripe/hard to describe the tannins. One of those things is not like the others.

David,
I try to describe the intensity and the textures of the tannins. Probably "firm" would have been
a better choice of words. The tannins were not angular/bitey/gritty like you'd get in a young Nebbiolo.
They were not gentle/velvety/silky as in a fully mature red.
