WTN: Try this by listening to Nocturnes from Chopin

by rainer.volz » Sat Sep 09, 2017 5:30 am

2004 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese Goldkapsel
Delicate, seductive scent of white flowers and fruits with a touch of citrus and herbs.
Youthfully fresh on the palate with wonderful harmony. Reminiscent of white peaches, limes, starry fruit and verbena.
All the components of this wine seem to be in balance.
Incredibly light on its feet and seductive. Like the Nocturnes from Chopin, I could listen to all day long.
I very much like this wine at this stage: after puberty, starting into adult life.

Cheers, Rainer

Sounds great. I finished all my 2009 Goldkapsel Spatlese from him. Couldn't resist!

I have only a small part of my wine collection at home. The major part is about 1.5 hours car drive away in air conditioned compartments. That is how I'm conditioned to refrain from enjoying too many wine beauties already in their youth ;-)

Have you ever tried Vollenweider's 2006 Goldkapsel Spätlese? It's absolutely amazing (despite the rather difficult vintage) and now in fullest bloom. Daniel Vollenweider is a great guy. If you happen to visit Europe sometimes you should try to visit him.

I'm regularly in Europe for work and family reasons, as my wife is from Northern Germany. But it's hard to get the time to visit the Mosel.

I've only managed to get to the Mosel once, in spring 07, and Vollenweider was actually our first stop. He cooked dinner for us (and Peter Ruhrberg, the organizer of the evening) and we tasted through the '06 range (and more). I just checked my notes and indeed the 06 GK spatlese was a standout of the evening, although apparently none was scheduled to be exported to the States. (Not that that should be a problem, because the bulk of my Vollenweider wines were purchased by mail in Europe from the estate. I haven't checked recently but for a while he had a remarkable selection of past vintages still available on the website. But maybe his fame has caught up with the quality.)

06 Auslese LGK was another standout of the evening, but I haven't tasted it since then.

His American distribution is now completely pathetic. It's unfortunate.

Rahsaan, here are a few wines from past vintages that Daniel still has on his list:

2013 Kröver Steffensberg Riesling Auslese
2009 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese
2009 Schimbock Riesling Auslese
2007 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spätlese

Cheers, Rainer
