WTN: In the Cortese of the Crimson King

by David M. Bueker » Sat Sep 09, 2017 1:12 pm

2014 Idlewild Cortese Fox Hill Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (9/7/2017)
Served blind to my tasting group, this baffled them as to its origins. There were guesses of Alsace, Chablis and even a nod to California, but nothing that really hit home. The complexity of fruit, spice, stone and herb kept people guessing, and impressed even the one guy who was not a fan of the wine (he guessed Alsace, and he does not like Alsatian wines). It's funny that I keep running across bottles of this in my cellar. I could have sworn I drank them all, but I keep finding more. Good thing too, as time continues to improve the wine.

I have one bottle of this left, which I marked with a big NO to warn my daughter to keep her hands off (she really likes Sam's wines). It's so good with a few years of age I want to hold onto it for about another year to see what develops. I had two, but took one to McCool as a thank you gift to a friend there. He'd never had a Cortese so he's in for a treat.

I'm also going to bury some of the later vintages of this wine to see if they age as nicely.
