Reading through a thread on CT just now caused me to stop and ponder the heartbreak of leaving behind a serious wine collection. There are two guys in Tampa, for instance. One has packed up the car with 5 or 6 cases of best stuff--he mentioned La Taches, plural. The rest he leaves behind and just hopes for the best--he thinks, or thought two days ago when the hurricane was expected to affect the east coast more than the west it's now aimed right at--his house might be fine, but it's surrounded by old oaks which will beat it up if torn apart and turned into missiles.
Another is staying to protect his 3K+ bottle cellar. He has a generator to keep it going but apparently there are generators and there are generators, and he's now sorry he doesn't have a more powerful one. And in ten feet of water, it might not matter.
What a set of decisions. Sure feel for them.
Bob and I were discussing what we would do in an emergency (rising water would be the issue in this location). Take one car or two (we have three), that kind of thing. We both quickly agreed two--the Murano, which has AWD and can travel easily off road if one must leave the road to make headway, and the Mercedes van, because it's a tiny house on wheels and we can live in it if we have to. We'd grab the cats, the contents of the safe, and just go. Wine didn't come up--not that I have anything like even one bottle of La Tache. And it's not that we're so noble, it's just not where our heads were at. And wine's replaceable.
