WTN: Savigny Les Laviers, Bouchard Pere et Fils, 2010

Good timing: loved the Tollot-Beaut Savigny Les Lavieres 1er Cru 2014 recently---and now here's a Bouchard Savigny Les Lavieres 2010. Yassss!

I have loudly proclaimed my fondness for Savigny-les-Beaune, that small area that produces well above its expected quality level. The pinot noir---there’s negligible white produced---is the epitome of everything enchanting about pinot. Cherry-berry fruits, fine structured acidity, low tannins, and pure, elegant refined flavors, with everything suspended in perfect balance.

The Savigny-les-Beaune Les Lavieres 2010 from Bouchard is not an exception; rather, it is a re-affirmation of just how pleasant and charming and satisfying Savigny can be. Plump at first, but never glossy or jammy or confected, it is seductive on the palate and lingers long at the finish. Virtually seamless, rich but restrained, the 2010 is totally satisfying.

I love red Savigny-l-B-just after NSG and Volnay in number of cellared bottles, and because I might drink earlier/not record as cellared probably #1 in Burgundy consumption.

That said I'd take issue with idea of Savigny blanc being "neglible." About 15% of production, and in the hand of good producers maybe a better deal than rouge. Pavelot SLB village, Camus-Bruchon “les Goudelettes” , or 1er Aux Vergelesses from Bize or Chandon Briailles are really great wines, often the equivalent of Meursaults that cost 2X (or more). Worth talking about. Mini-rant over.

I had so many over-oaked Bouchards that I don't look for, but reputation has gotten a lot better over last decade so I should revisit (my experiences were mostly '90/'91 and '96-'02 wines so quite outdated)., This sounds lovely and I'd like to try

I think it's worth your while to update on Bouchard Pere, especially the domaine and monopole. Henriot has so vastly improved the quality level across the board that it is one of the great comeback stories of the wine world. What you were drinking 10 years ago is not at all what Bouchard is now. The heavy, dull, plodding, over-oaked wines are (pretty much) gone; the Bouchards now are brighter, have expressive fruit, something I call "reserved exuberance'---definitely old word, not at all new world, but neither the deadening flavor repression from workaday viticulture/grape selection/winemaking.

As to your mini-rant: okay, well said and I should have worded it differently. SLB white is 'negligible' TO ME, as I just don't drink that much of it, don't see it around all that often, and if I'm drinking chardonnay, I'm usually drinkig from other favorite haunts. Don't deny there are some good chards from SLB; they just don't figure that much in my rotation, whereas the reds have become my go-to Bougognes.
