WTN: The loneliest number

One; here's a bunch of onesies.

2013 Sineann Merlot Champoux Vineyard Horse Heaven Hills
This is SERIOUS merlot. Dark, concentrated blue and black fruit, dark chocolate, coffee, and chewy, big tannins. Would change a lot of minds about this grape--Miles would like it.

2015 Turley Zinfandel Juvenile California
Vibrant ripe red fruit, strawberry jam, pepper, bramble, bug spray and a velvetty sweet finish. Won a 48-taster contest by a landslide. Only medium bodied, but next day leftovers put on a considerable amount of weight and the bug spray element was gone.

2015 Achával-Ferrer Malbec Mendoza
Violets and wild blue/black berries carried by unexpectedly assertive and intriguing spices. Rustic tannins suggest cellaring, but it drinks well enough now to take 2nd place in a blind tasting (48 tasters).

2012 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha Colchagua Valley
Pretty good for $12. Medium bodied with dark red fruit and a touch of that Chilean green bell pepper thing.

2013 Soos Creek Artist Series #13 Columbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
50/50 CS/CF. Ripe plum and red currant notes augmented by complex spice and herbs from each of the two grapes. Walks a perfect line between bright and concentrated. Loved this.

2015 Maso Canali Pinot Grigio Trentino
Drinkable with nothing wrong but nothing's really right either: boring and overpriced for PG at $17.

2016 Odfjell Sauvignon Blanc Armador Casablanca Valley
Pleasantly balanced, flavors lean toward green apple and melon, and it carries a dusty note I like a lot. But there are better SB's for $15.

2016 Yalumba Viognier Y Series South Australia
Very floral with lots of old lady perfume, almost off dry, lacks the citrus and steel that made earlier vintages palatable to this viognier hater. Last night I put the remainders of a bottle in a glass as a fruit fly trap. Didn't even get one customer--how bad is it when the fruit flies don't bite?

2016 Nathan Gray Chardonnay Columbia Valley
Elegant in style with creamy apple and lemon chiffon pie. Balanced, nice structure. Better than I bargained for at $16.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I don't think that's when I use the term. It's something very particular to zinfandel and I associate it with over-ripeness--it smells like the sweet perfume added to poisons, like RAID and more likely to show up in those that taste red-fruited. Every zin ever made by Trentadue, in the old days anyway, and almost every zin made in Paso Robles has it.
