Consumption Statistic

by Bill Buitenhuys » Wed Sep 27, 2017 2:32 pm

I love Cellartracker for many reasons but one is all the fun statistics that are available to play with.

This one surprised me.

Since 2005, when I started using CT, my highest consumption out of our cellar from any single producer is 5.5% from Edmunds St John. I didn't think I was opening ESJ one in every eighteen bottles, but there you go. Had a lovely 2001 R&G this past week.

Next closest are each a factor of 3 less: Heredia, JP Brun, Taurino, and Pepiere at 1 in every ~60 bottles.

I bet people can guess my top producer since 2004 (when I joined CT).

Numbers 2-10 are in order:

Edmunds St. John (3.5%)
Selbach-Oster (2.5%)
Rhys (2.0%)
Leitz (1.8%)
Ridge (1.6%)
Wind Gap (1.6%)
Christoffel (1.6%)
Catoir (1.4%)
Jadot (1.4%)

I drink/own such a huge variety of wine, I can't even guess what my #1 would be. I'm not even sure what my top ten would look like. I'll go look, though, as you've made me curious.

Hmmm. This is bizarre. Cowan Cellars--22? I didn't even buy 22 bottles. I think I bought just a case. Wonder if I somehow doubled-up on inputting, then deleted the extras as drunk vs. removing from inventory without a trace. (Now I know why never to do that.) Long Shadows is also a surprise. I've certainly owned a few, but it's never been a big deal for me like, say, Karl Lawrence and Reynvaan. Arrowood must be another problem like the Cowans. I bought a case of the 05 Cabs sight unseen for $15 per based mostly on love for the brand from a decade earlier, and those turned out to be porty, 15%+ alcohol messes--no wonder they had to dump them. I gave most of them away. And Graham Beck--bought three six packs of his vintage sparkles back in the early 2000's.

What this shows you though, is like I said. My top spot's only 1.8%--I buy a LOT of different stuff, and case purchases aren't common. I guess I'm not a very loyal consumer.

Arcadian 1.8% Consumed (34)
Long Shadows Wineries 1.3% Consumed (26)
St. Innocent 1.3% Consumed (25)
Cowan Cellars 1.1% Consumed (22)
DeLille Cellars 1.1% Consumed (22)
Karl Lawrence 1.1% Consumed (21)
Ridge 1.0% Consumed (20) /
Reynvaan Family Vineyards 1.0% Consumed (19)
Arrowood 1.0% Consumed (19)
Graham Beck 0.8% Consumed (16)

And better than starting with a Hassel and ending with a hoff.

I thought my drinking habits were much more varied than the data shows for the top spot but after that 1:60 - 1:100 for the rest of the top 10 seems more like it.

Donnhoff is 5.5%. That really is too low, as it makes up 8.9% of the cellar.

I just realized something else, thinking about the Reynvaan on my list which is relatively recent. Though I joined much earlier and have a pretty low member number on CT (about 23,000), I didn't load my inventory until 2013. So in fact my consumption history is actually fairly recent. If I could go back ten years instead of less than five, it would look a lot different. St. Innocent would probably be #1, for instance.

Mine runs heavily to Pinot Noirs (and some Chardonnays.) I wasn't surprised by #!. Like Jenise I go for variety and don't buy by the case.

Williams Selyem 3.7% (24)
Lioco 1.9% (12)
Maison Alex Gambal 1.6% (10)
Alysian Wines 1.4% (9)

I was surprised that I didn't have a higher percentage of consumption of Ridge wines. I did have some vintages of Lytton Springs that were consumed before I registered with CellarTracker. My CT records show only 0.8% consumption of Ridge, tied with LaRue and other producers.

Where are you getting the percentages on CT?

My Top 10 producers are

Casa Vinicola Roxan
Beyerskloof
Kanonkop
Champagne Raymond Boulard
Delheim
Fairview
Flagstone
Springfield Estate
Château Tour St. Bonnet
Lanson

I don't use CT and don't systematically track consumption. (I'm not going to go back and code my TNs)

But for my holdings, Louis Boillot and ESJ are by far the top two. I don't think they are the top two in terms of consumption, because I'm holding onto most of those wines to give them more (and more) age.

From the CT homepage, click "Wine Consumed" then using the Summarized By drop down, select Producer and you will get a list of consumption by producer sorted highest to lowest with percentages and quantities listed next to each.

Thanks, Bill, David

I see now the percentages appear when using the new CT interface. I used the Classic where they don't appear.

The figures are not a complete reflection as they count any size bottle and I had quite a lot of Champagne halves.

My CT consumption statistics since May 2014 are falsified because they include150 bottles of sweeties, which I auctioned off, and also bottles given away. Excluding Dönnhoff, von Schubert, Foreau and Huet for the former reason, my top 10 are as follows -

Fèlsina Beradenga 1.6%
Château Courac, Laudun, S.Rhône 1.3%
Mas Amiel, Côtes du Roussillon and Maury 1.3%
Château Poujeaux, Moulis 1.1%
Domaine du Cros, Marcillac 1.1%
Les Arpents du Soleil, Normandy 1% (mainly Pinot Noir and Auxerrois in 50cl bottles)
Domaine Valambelle, Faugères 0.9%
Domaine de l'Oratoire St.Martin, Cairanne 0.9%
Château de Beaucastel 0.9%
Château Sociando-Mallet 0.9%

I am surprised that there are no Loire, Beaujolais, Cahors or N.Rhône red producers in my top 10, maybe because my consumption of those wine types is spread between a greater number of producers.

Mine aren't really accurate, as I only tend to enter wines that I intend to cellar. Pepiere would actually almost certainly be #1, and Beaujolais producers like Brun or Coudert would certainly be in top 10. And if I had entered Bone Jolly rose and red and HoG, ESJ would be in top 3 I bet.

• Trimbach 2.5%
• Joseph Drouhin 2.1%
• Dönnhoff 1.4%
• Domaine Huet 1.2%
• Weingut Josef Leitz 1.2%
• Edmunds St. John 1.1%
• Domaine François Cotat (Paul & François) 1.0%
• Château Meyney 0.9%
• Louis Jadot 0.9%
• Domaine Michel Lafarge 0.9%
• Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 0.8%
