(for David): Impressions on Donnhoff '16 vintage?

by Jenise » Tue Oct 03, 2017 1:09 pm

There are quite a few trockens up on Winebid, and I need to fill out a case. Grab or avoid?

The wines are good, and '16 is a really nice Trocken vintage.

It's not a blockbuster year by any measure, but I bought with confidence.

Good answer. Options are:

Trocken #4
Tonshiefer Trocken #5
Roxheimer Hollenpfad Trocken #9

Nominally I went for the second two. But what are the differences, besides more words. (More words sounds better to me.) :)

Oops, forgot to list the Kreuznacher Kahlenberg #8.

For dry Donnhoff I've only had the GGs and the regular estate QbA trocken, plus a few Kab or Spat trockens from early aughts. Now it looks like they are regularly producing trockens (besides the estate and GGs) from vineyards I'm not familiar with - Hollenpfad, Tonschiefer, Kahlenberg. Any comments on character of those spots?

oops, see Jenise asked same question while I was cooking

I have had them. How much do they cost?

Tonshiefer is basically the dry version of the well known Estate Riesling. I like it-every year.

The Roxheimer wine is a different expression as the vineyard is different from the rest of the Dönnhoff stable. Also very good.

I am not a huge fan of the Kreuznach wines.

At those prices, I would not hesitate to buy the ones David mentions!

And you're not a fan of the Kreuz____ because?

Btw, Winebid's price on the Tonshiefer and Roxheimer are $20 and $25 ea.

I find the Kreuznacher wines to be rather boring. That is not always true, but...

Your prices are decent.

Yeah, I determine the prices were okay. Add on other costs and they're less okay, but it will get some wine I'm interested in delivered. Over the summer I accumulated 25 bottles--two cases plus one stupid bottle that will cost a fortune to send by itself. The added shipping cost for it to travel with the four Donnhoffs will be close to free.

So the Tonschiefer is what used to be the trocken QbA? With vig that's getting pricey.

Dale, I don't think that's right. The German web seller I'm looking at offers Riesling QbA trocken 2016 at €9,90 and Riesling trocken Tonschiefer (Lage: Oberhäuser Leistenberg) 2016 at €13,50. It sounds very much like two different wines with a vineyard specification for Tonschiefer, to boot. I'm interested in both :D .

David, I brought what I believed was a Donnhoff dupe to the attention of CT staff. Could you take a look at this thread and contribute?

Go for both and add a Höllenpfad for 20,50 on. If you are buying from my source, that is. For me he is really Deutschlands bester Weinhändler! :D

Yes, my apologies. The Tonsheifer is Leistenberg Trocken.
