WTN: Chiquet Mann Jaboulet Oreno Castelgiocondo

2004 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Special Club Brut – showing some colour now, but still bright with a toasty nose with citrus, smooth on palate – very enjoyable.

2004 Albert Mann Riesling Rosenberg – from a magnum that looked like an Indian club. Now showing some colour- medium apricot – and a pronounced petrol nose, the wine had a sweet entry but was fairly dry in the mouth, and had good length.

1989 Jaboulet CNduP Les Cedres – getting long in the tooth for many CNdup, this one actually showed very decently. Medium colour with pale edges, serious tar in the nose and some leather and meaty notes, and quite good length ending with decent acidity. Not everyone’s idea of a CNduP, but I really enjoy them when they become almost Burgundian.

2001 Castelgiocondo Brunello – fairly dark with a slightly cheesy, earthy (in a good way) nose. Good underlying fruit, good levels of acidity and still showing soft tannins.

2000 Sette Ponti Oreno
– medium colour, nice dark fruit in the nose, earthy and nice, still showing tannins on palate and decent length. Drinks well now but may improve.

2007 Cypres de Climens – medium straw coloured, a slightly unusual nose, with coconut and apricot, full mouth feel, fairly sweet and OK acidity. Great Barsac value, with a somewhat jarring blue label.

I love Chiquet. I had other vintages of the Special Club.

How often do you find that CdPs become Burgundian lately?

I loved that Chiquet! I didn't even know what I was drinking when I was handed a glass but understood instantly that it was an excellent vintage bottling at peak performance.

The Mann was interesting; I don't know what else I'd have guessed especially with that advanced color, but I didn't pick up any of the markers for reisling even though the wine was quite delicious. And credit to Coop: perfectly paired with a fall salad of roasted delicata squash and fresh apples. I'll copy that!

The Jaboulet came across tarrier than I'd have expected of Burgundy, and I couldn't pick up much other detail so I'd have guessed Barolo. Btw, it was right about here that I realized that the rest of you were picking up aromas I wasn't getting and didn't get to the same degree on the rest of the wines, which I was a little mystified by but didn't understand until I woke up the next morning with a fever.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Gaston Chiquet does not get the accolades that they are due. Their NV was my house Champagne for several years.

The 1990 Donjon is edging in that direction.

I think Chaim was thinking more recent trends in CNdP, and whether the Burgundian transformation could happen to newer bottlings.

The ship has pretty much sailed on buying 25+ year old CNdP.
