WTN: Dog B'day (Bassets, Bassetti, Faithful Hound)

by Dale Williams » Tue Oct 24, 2017 2:15 pm

Saturday was a no wine night, I picked up Betsy at JFK and then went back to office to take care of a problem. Sunday AM got CSA and did a speech at a synagogue, and then got ready for Ruby’s Birthday Tea. The Basset hound had turned One Th, but we waited for Betsy’s return to have the party.

Guests included 2 English Labs, a Cairn terrier mix, a Lhasa-poo, a cockapoo, a Lhasapoo, 2 Yorkies, and a Beagle Mix. There were dog treats, apples, cheese, iced and hot tea. And of course wines:

2013 Laurent Cognard “les Bassets” Montagny 1er. Full bodied, good acids, lots of oak that could use some time to integrate, but refreshing with clean white orchard fruit. B

2013 Mulderbosch Faithful Hound.
Ripe cassis and black plum, some coffee mocha, easy to drink. B-

2005 Edmunds St John Bassetti Syrah

Lovely, black plum and berry, smoke and coffee. Balanced, structured, young. With time at dinner than night (sausage and meatballs over pasta), there’s a smoked meat note. Good!!!!
A-

The hound didn’t care about wine, but had a ball with friends.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

It was her first birthday! Turned one on Th (even though she is a rescue, we have papers and know actual birthdate- someone got her from breeder as a Christmas present for their kids, discovered they couldn't handle kids and puppy, and took her to a shelter, from there to Basset rescue to us).

So cute! I just read your guest list to Bob, he's still laughing. Two hugs for the pooch!

Right number of dogs, but listed the Lhasapoo twice, and forgot the JRussell/Chihuahua mix (a Jackwawa?)

Jackawawa--that's great.

Speaking of chihuahuas, a few weeks ago I adopted a chihuahua for a few hours. Saw him running pell mell in the middle of the major road to our community. Cars were scattered all over trying not to hit him. I pulled over jumped out and yelled to him, and he stopped immediately and turned to stare: when I leaned over and patted my knees, he came running. And so, in a flash, gone were our plans for the evening as we put up signs and scoured four neighborhoods in the direction he was running from. Amazingly, in one those 1:499 chance things, we actually found the owner. But in those four hours we fell madly in love with him, and he with us. I would love to have kept him if I could. Had no idea chihuahuas could be THAT sweet.
