which wine to pick?

by Peter May » Mon Oct 30, 2017 4:17 pm

Ruby Tuesday tonight - which one white and red is best, or least worst

Sauvignon Blanc, Nobilo • zesty and fresh
Chardonnay, Black Box • rich and fruity
Chardonnay, Charles & Charles • full and juicy
Chardonnay, Kendall-Jackson • oaky and complex

Merlot, Red Diamond • luscious and smooth
Cabernet, Black Box • full and oaky
Cabernet, Josh Cellars • rich and supple

of their wines Ruby Tuesday says
Relax, we’ve got you covered! It was hard work, but we tasted countless wines and selected only the most delicious, well-made ones for YOU. Whatever you’re in the mood for, we have a wine for that!

I'm obs not the customer they had in mind.......

(Why RT? Coz its a few mins walk from our overnight hotel, we can see it. There are sidewalks, we don't have to cross a freeway or any major roads.)

FYI this is their full list - who wants to be bothered with geeky things like country of origin?

WHITE

Prosecco, La Marca • bubbly and refreshing
White Zinfandel, Beringer • soft and luscious
Moscato, Cupcake • fruity and sweet
Pinot Grigio, Ruffino Lumina • light and juicy
Pinot Grigio, Chloe • crisp and mellow
Sauvignon Blanc, Nobilo • zesty and fresh
Chardonnay, Black Box • rich and fruity
Chardonnay, Charles & Charles • full and juicy
Chardonnay, Kendall-Jackson • oaky and complex

RED

Pinot Noir, Mark West • balanced and soft
Pinot Noir, Meiomi • bright and expressive
Merlot, Red Diamond • luscious and smooth
Red Blend, Apothic • juicy and ripe
Malbec, Alamos • jammy and spicy
Cabernet, Black Box • full and oaky
Cabernet, Josh Cellars • rich and supple

Oh wow, that's just awful. Mass market choices all, and aimed at the type of wine drinker who prefers candy-ish RS and "smooth". The KJ chardonnay and Josh Cab are easily your best bets.

Agreed. Did you really need to drink wine in the restaurant? (Come to think of it, do you really need to eat at Ruby Tuesdays?)

Whenever I'm forced into such situations I abstain, or maybe drink beer if there is something passable.

Thanks, Jenise.
My thoughts too, although if we have fish Nobilo Savvie is likely to be chosen. Jo likes her Savvie and Nobilo is a NZ winery, and hopefully it's NZ wine.

The Nobilo isn't horrible, it just doesn't have much character. The KJ is a better chard than the Nobilo is a Sauv Blanc--but if Sauv Blanc is preferred then by all means, it will do. (Where I would absolutely forbid you to order anything from the Cupcake line.)

My first thought when I see Apothic on a wine list is to order a beer..that being said,wd go with the KJ chard..or even the Ruffino PG..had some of the PG at an in store tasting this weekend and found it to be a food friendly wine..not outstanding by any means but a decent by the glass drop with food.

Well thanks for all the wine suggestions....

Unfortunately we didn't get to Ruby Tuesdays

Was sitting in room at computer on 4th (top) floor of Holiday in when there was the most terrific bang above and the room shook. We thought maybe something - a light plane? A telephone pole? had crashed into hotel but no other noises, no emergency vehicles, no shouts.

Out the window the wind which had been strong when we arrived was now fierce and it was raining so heavily. the car park was flooded, and a small river running along the road. So was it thunder or a lightning strike? Couldn't hear any thunder and see no lightning... But the internet was down.

Dinner time came and rain was as heavy, we waited another hour and convinced ourselves it was easing off so wrapped up in waterproofs and walked out. According to Google Maps Ruby was 8 minutes walk away. Well that wind forced the rain horizontallyy into us and an Applebees was there on the corner and in we went.

I recall some years having lunch at an Applebees, a nice enough family type place. This one was a sports bar, big bar in middle with booths around. Music blaring out of overhead speakers and a dozen large TV screens grabbing ones eyes wherever you looked, you couldn't avoid them.. But it was dry inside.

The separate drinks menu did not have any prices on it! Waitress went off to find out the price of a couple of them.

So, we had the Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay 'Vintners Reserve' 2016 which cost $31.99++

It was better than expected, crisp and dry, actually we quite liked it.

Then we went back and got even more soaked, and we were only out for a few minutes.

At checkout this morning they said they'd had a power outage and that the hotel lost power in about half the rooms, luckily not our room.

Good news, it wasn't raining this morning.

It was snowing, great big chunks of snow, had to clear windows of car, snow covered road markings and I390 was at a crawl, couldn't see anything, it was a white-out.

We headed east; sun came out as we approached Finger Lakes.

Dinner tonight at www.topofthelakepennyan.org .No wine menu online, but they say they have a 'Full Wine Menu'.

We'll see!!

I can't remember a worse meal in my adult life than the one meal we had at an Applebee's about a year ago. It was THAT bad. Nothing on either of our two plates was properly prepared or seasoned.

But at least you now know why several of us recco'd the KJ chard. It's not bad at all.

Well, Top of The Lake had an excellent wine menu, over 20 reds all local with the exception of 2 from California and 1 from Europe.
Only one or two of the local wines was above $30.

We had

Keuka Spring 'Epic Reserve' 2016
Finger Lakes
abv 13%

Menu said was a blend of Cab Sauv, Franc and Merlot (tho' the winery website has them the other way around) and the winery is 2 miles from the restaurant. Cellar door price $24.99, on the menu it was $32.

Lovely Bdx style wine, bit more fruit sweetness than Bdx..

Many wines I wanted to try, I would have chosen a Cab Franc/Lemberger blend as that sounded interesting. Shame we were there only one night.
