by TomHill » Tue Jan 02, 2018 2:17 pm

Tried these two last night w/ Susan's son:
1. Ronchi di Pietro Schioppettino Dd'OC: Friuli Colli Orientali (13%; EnotexImports/Denver) Cividale 2015: Dark color; very strong black cherry/cola/Schio/herbal/spicy bit black pepper quite perfumed classic Schio nose; fairly tart strong cracked black pepper strong Schio/black cherry cola/licorice slight herbal/earthy some complex beautiful flavor w/ modest smooth tannins; very long very cracked black pepper very strong black cherry cola/Schio/blackberry slight herbal/earthy/dried Italian herbs fairly complex finish w/ modest tannins; a beautiful expression of Friuli Schio at a great price. $18.00 (KK)

2. OrsiFamily Schioppettino OrsiHomeRanch (13.7%; #374 of 552) Healdsburg 2014: Very dark color; quite spicy/black cherry cola/pungent/plummy some Schio fruit bit raspberry/DCV light toasty/oak complex bit earthy/rustic nose; fairly tart/tangy strong black cherry cola/licorice/pungent/plummy rather spicy/slight peppery light toasty/oak big/structured rather rugged flavor w/ some hard/rough tannins; very long strong licorice/black cherry cola/spicy slight peppery light toasty/oak structured/rough/rugged finish w/ modest hard tannins; a pretty rugged/structured red that speaks of Schioppettino but not the high-toned notes that grape often shows; needs 3-6 yrs of age. $36.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Pietro: This is a Schio I've reported on before. After the Ronchi di Cialla, this is probably the best Schio I've found in this country. Loads of cracked black pepper, unusual for a Schio.
_______________
2. Orsi: This is a wnry I discovered a month ago who grows/makes a big range of Italian varietals. (www.OrsiFamilyVineyards.com). This is the 2'nd Orsi I've tried. Winemaker is DickSchultz, of HardwoodCllrs. I'm excited about what they're doing.
