WTN: 2015 Wind Gap "Gap's Crown" Chardonnay and More!

by Brian K Miller » Mon Feb 26, 2018 1:09 pm

2015 Wind Gap Gaps Crown Chardonnay. This started out with lovely, savory, almost salty character. Lithe, lower in alcohol. With food (bleu cheese, believe it or not!) a bit more honeyed richness appeared. Captivating wine....this may be a re-purchase even though I am drowning in wine right now. On my top 10 list of Chardonnays, a grape I do not always like!

2010 Mangels Ranch Coombsville Syrah. A local (Solano County) winery doing some interesting things with both estate and (here) purchased grapes. A lithe, lighter bodied version of Syrah. Is there Coombsville character here? (my friend compared the wine to the Farella Merlot from Third Avenue North right against the ridgeline). Definitely red fruit, some pretty evident acid....florality is the dominant character. I mentioned Crozes Hermitage??? Quite nice.

Pax makes very nice, delicate Chardonnays. I like them. Problem is I never seem to open the ones I own. I am really not sure why.

Count me a big fan of Wind Gap’s Chardonnay. One of my favorite new world chards. Good value too.

The single vineyard wines are becoming just a bit pricey though. But so good I just swallow and pay.
