WTN: Easter/Passover- Sicily, Loire, Pomerol, Burg

by Dale Williams » Tue Apr 03, 2018 8:26 pm

No seder, but for first night of passover we had gefilte fish from Epstein's deli, matzah ball soup, a tiny hunk of brisket, tzimmes (carrots with prunes), and the 2015 COS Frappato
Very berry, herbs and a little barnyard. Light, fresh, fun and funky. B+/B

Saturday was scallops, oysters on half shell, broccoli rabe, and the
2013 Cazin Cour-Cheverny. A wooly note that I almost mistake for corkiness at first, but with air it’s definitely more damp wool. Green apple, lemon, and wax. Lighter rendition of Romarantin. B/B+

2016 Serge Laloue Sancerre (375)
Grass, catpee, more grass. Tastes like undercropped NZ SB. C+/C

Easter lunch at Betsy’s sister, we did deviled eggs (with capers or summer truffles) and leg of lamb ( garlic/rosemary/ anchovy/lemon paste). They had taramasalata, Ottolenghi sweet potatoes, salmon, brussels sprouts, and salad

2016 Karine Lauverjat Sancerre
This is more like it, just a touch pf grass over lime and apple, good mineral finish. B+

1989 Domaine de L’Eglise (Pomerol)
I double-decanted at home, wasn’t too thrilled on opening- reticent fruit, a very mature ashtray note. But on serving a much more attractive wine with solid black plum fruit, a light mocha note, and leather. Less ashtray than cigarbox, best is last. Nice Pomerol texture. Nothing exciting, but satisfying. B+

Home that night for last dinner before kitchen demolition starts, Bobby Flay chicken with mint sauce, sweet potato, salad, and the 2015 Jane & Sylvain Passetoutgrains. Richer than most PTG, more PN-ish than Gamay-ish, but maybe a function of the vintage. Rich cherry fruit, hint of framboise, a little herb and pine. Fun. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I ran across the COS Frappato at a local shop (not my usual place) a few weeks ago. They wanted $49 for it. I laughed out loud.

Ouch. This was $20.99 from Posner.
I would laughed too (or cried)
I had thought of inviting you to stop for lunch again sometime, to serve you the Laloue Sancerre, just to get a pic of your face

Regardless of the wine it would be good to see you both (and meet the new hound), but our travel schedules are a mess these days, and too dominated by timetables versus leisure. Hopefully things will calm down soon.
