A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The new TotalWines & More opened in SantaFe on Thurs, so I had to go in ystrday & check it out. Pretty much the standard TotalWines. An astonishing selection of commodity/meh wines. Didn't see anything that really compelled me to buy. Lot's of no-name wines that are TW exclusive so you can't find out what they really are.
These two dull-as-dishwater wines are TW direct imports, so I thought I'd give them a shot. They supposedly represent real values in the TW portfolio. These two were not that.
They both come thru SarantyImports, which is an offshoot or part of WJ Deutsch imports. So that's a good clue to look for on the label for wines to avoid.
Ewald Gruber is located in the Weinviertel NW of Wien near the Czech border. This area can grow great wines, as illustrated by IngridGroiss.
So...based an this vast sampling of two data points, bottom feeding at TW is more expensive and less likely of success than at TraderJoe's.
TW is going to have zero impact on any decent wine shop in Northern NM. Their wines selection of commodity wines is nothing that interests me. It will/may have an impact on grocery store wine sales, where commodity wines are the standard fare. But, for me, the store pretty much has zero interest. Though, I did see on their shelves, BlueNun Liebfraumilch. Haven't seen that, free-range, in yrs. I listened to my inner child and eschewed buying a btl.
