WTN Da Vero 2013 Cannonau

by Brian K Miller » Wed May 02, 2018 11:19 am

Da Vero (Dry Creek Valley) "Cannonau"

Earthy, slightly funky, savory, some nice acid but not too much. Perfect wine for the Mexican feast my landlady sprung on us, believe it or not!

Have never seen an American Carignane labeled Cannonau!

Well, Brian...I would almost be sure that the TTB doesn't approve Cannonau as a varietal name,
so they probably just view it as a propietary name. Much like the L-M Tribidrag.
Now if DaVero tries to trademark that name, there will be a problem. Just like there
was, yrs ago, when HopKiln trademarked Primitivo (and the wine wasn't even from Primitivo).

The owners of Da Vero are interesting people really into "Italy", so that makes sense.

Yup, Brian..totally agree. They make some pretty interesting stuff, though a bit on the pricey side.
What was the price on this wine? I would guess around $40-$50.

I think so. Not cheap.

I am utterly irrational in my wine budgeting. I have begun "culling" wine clubs now, because I have enough wine I cannot drink it all. Not really that heavy a drinker, to be honest. I have a...Collecting "problem"

And it is painful to cut back. Painful. Totally irrational. I have killed three this week.

FWIW, I believe Cannonau usually refers to Grenache in Italy. In Corsica, at any rate.

Cannonau is, indeed, Grenache (not Carignan)
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Ach! My bad. I didn't taste any of the white pepper or "strawberry" notes I would expect, so that may explain my mistake!
