WTN: All Betz are off!

by Jim Grow » Fri Jun 01, 2018 8:33 pm

2013 Betz Family Winery Clos de Betz; First of a six pack and very enjoyable now but a bit young. Nose was all rosemary and sweet cherry and the palate was more diffuse herb and more sweet cherry. Tannins were present but my wife found no need to whisk her wine. Glad I have 5 more and I will open the next one in a year. abv of 14.3% (do not know the blend )

Typically it’s about 65% Merlot with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

Betz is definitely a shining star in my state--not one of the fancy new guys, but the guy who's been there all along.

Jenise,

Have you noticed a bit of a swing to the riper end of the spectrum at Betz in recent vintages?

My experience with Betz is too minimal to comment. I never had one before 2003 when I moved here, and I haven't had the luxury of repeat tastings since. However, I would expect it to be the case: where Bob Betz loved to make tannic wines that rewarded aging, the new owners probably want/need to compete for the buying $$ of the impatient young turks.
