Do Cal. Sparklers age well?

by Jim Grow » Sat Jun 02, 2018 2:02 pm

I have had a few Scharffenberger, Schramsberg, Moet Chandon etc. but never any that were 15 or more years old. I have not had the vintage Roederer Hermitage, which I believe is their top of the line in Cal. Since I love aged (20+yrs.) Champagne I was wondering if Cal. sparklers could age well if storage was excellent. Anyone have experience with oldish Cal. sparklers?

Nope, not 20 years old at any rate. One exception, a Roederer L'Ermitage from a cool vintage, but that's almost French since the same team who makes Cristal in Champagne every year finishes that effort then gets on a plane to California and makes the L'Ermitage.

That is too bad. I meant L'Ermitage, not Hermitage.

I have had L’Ermitage with 12-15 years on it, and it was lovely.

Schramsberg ages well.

Have not tempted fate with the others.

I will be laying down bottles of Ultramarine as an experiment, but not many.

Used to enjoy Schramsberg's Library releases (for Bob and I, a sentimental thing so we drank often) but all the Schramsbergs I've had in the last 15 years have disappointed.
