2015 Forlorn Hope Picpoul (Calaveras County)

by Brian K Miller » Fri Aug 24, 2018 10:47 am

from Matthew Rorick's newish home ranch property in Calaveras County. Who knew the foothills could produce a lively white loike this?

This wine is simply a "wow" wine for me right now. Bright citrus and pear fruit, but with a downright salty line of flavor right through the core. Lithe and elegant, with delicious brightness. 110% up my alley-one of the more exciting wines of the past month.

I think there may be one case left. But a new vintage is coming!

We also tried the Poe Vermouths. Another fascinating trio of wine-related beverages. Grapefruit, Blood Orange, and Orange. My favorite was the grapefruit, with its musky, dusky cardamom element really showing well.

If you are ever in Downtown Napa, definitely check out the Outland tasting cooperative. Three excellent wineries in an elegant, gleaming white space. (Poe, Forlorn Hope, and Farella (who make outstanding more "traditional Napa) wines from Coombsville))

Yup, Brian...Matt's Picpoul is really good stuff.
I don't often stop at the Outland tasting room because I've already tried Matt's wines. We buy every one
he makes. But the Poe Vermouths sound interesting.

Tom:

The Poe wines (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and of course Vermouth) are outstanding as well. Flavorful, balanced, elegant "Burgundian" in style.

And I have liked the Farella wines for years-definitely more "traditionally Napa" than Poe and Matt, but very, very well made. The Farella Merlot is consistently outstanding.
