WTN: Wines by river- Loires, Bandol, Bdx blanc, Greek pink

by Dale Williams » Fri Aug 24, 2018 4:28 pm

After a wet and hot mid-August, was happy when Wednesday skies cleared and a beautiful evening for a park concert arrived. Nice jazz show (Monika Herzig’s SHEroes), lovely night by the Hudson, good food, good friends. I carried lobster/corn salad, beet and chevre salad, burrata caprese, and some leftover charcuterie. Others shared salami, cheeses, and more.

2017 Stobi Rose (Macedonia)

Strawberries and pine needles, lemon zest. Unusual and interesting. B+/B

2017 Ch. Graville Lacoste (Graves) (375 ml)
Pineapple and grapefruit, citrus blossom, not a Sauvignon Blanc -ish as I expected. Clean and light. B

2010 Boulay “Clos de Beaujeu” Sancerre
Full but with good acidic backbone, citrus and floral notes, long chalky finish. Drinking very well. A-/B+

2016 (?) Fresche Gamay Anjou
just a hint of this geranium/potted plant thing that seems to irritate me in Loire gamay, black cherry and herbs, surprising bite of some tannin. B/B-

2017 Bastide Blanche Bandol Rose
Lovely rose, Delicate but with some power, red cherry and a little nectarine, long finish for rose. B++

2005 Baudry Chinon

This is the “domaine” bottling. At a pretty perfect place. Black cherry, herbs, cigarbox, just a hint of animal. Tannins resolved, acids in balance. Fred tastes and immediately orders some 2015 Baudry. Great showing for a $15 wine cellared for a decade +. A-

2016 McManis Cabernet Sauvignon

I can see why this is popular with a lot of people, but this outright sweet profile doesn’t do it for me, C+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

My oldest Baudry is from 2007. Looks like I don’t need to be concerned.

I'd have zero worries. I bet even the Les Granges (earliest drinking) is still fine (esp with your cold cellar)

I misunderstood your title but it still seems like a great MoCool theme: wines associated with rivers....Rhine/Rhone/Loire/Russian/Columbia/Sarr/Ruwer/Mosel/Nahe etc. We will see what the organizers think for 2019

Move the event to Colorado, and we can roll one on the river.
