A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. We'd tasted the eder GV from BalancedWineSlctns several weeks ago and thought it a nice GV, but just that. So I ordered the R to try. This was a much more impressive wine. One of BWS better producers.

2. Bechtold: This was a new producer for me to try. I was impressed. A very old-timey Alsace R like most were made in the pre-Z-H days. Back then, my rule of thumb for buying Alsace R was the more painful it was to drink from a teeth-chattering acidity, the more likely it would be to develop into a great R with time. This Bechtold is just one such R.

The Merkelbach is closer to 7% RS than 2 or 3%. Of course with 8-9 g/l of acidity it comes across as drier. All of their wines are aged in fuder, so any trapped CO2 is just residual from fermentation.

The Merkelbach brothers are both in their 80s, and have no heirs. Supposedly there is a plan in place for what happens when they can no longer do the work, but what that plan is nobody knows.
