WTN: Hudelot-Noellat Bourgogne 2004, and question

Bourgogne Rouge 2004, Alain Hudelot-Noellat.

Typical light burgundian colour with hints of brown and a pink rim. Perhaps a bit light for the age?
Smells of something dark and spicy. A lot of oak. Butter and vanilla like a kick-ass Meursault. Hmm.. Interesting but ok, well.
Tastes rasberry, cherries with medium acidity. Good aftertaste.

Questions: Does anyone have experience with wines from this producer? Are they all this oaky? Does anyone know where the grapes for this wine come from?

I haven't had many Hudelot-Noellats, but my impression was that they were reasonably traditional. Maybe it's shutting down- not so common in a regional Bourgogne, but it happens, and sometimes when the fruit shuts down the oak seems obtrusive? Just a thought, as some folks say the 2004s are shutting down early (adn showing a bit green).

I have visited Alain Hudelot-Noellat's domaine in person a couple of times. He produced a lot of top-notch premier and grands crus from the Cote de Nuits in the mid to late 1990s. Especially the Richebourg and Romanee-St-Vivant. The domaine owns several excellently-placed plots in major appellations.

According to Remington Norman's "The Great Domaines of Burgundy", his Bourgogne Rouge comes from a 2-hectare plot in the commune of Gilly.

I'd give it a couple of more years and then see if it's opened up.

Haven't had the 04, but I found the 2002 Bourgogne from H-N to be a lighter elegant style wine without new oak flavors. If I had to guess, I would say Dale is right, the 2004 may be shut down and showing oak as the predominant flavor.

I've never tried the H-N grand cru wines from Vosne Romanee. The village wines (Chambolle Musigny and Vosne) I thought were delicious and good value in 2002, and the VR especially seemed to be of 1er quality.
