I don't know about spraying the vines with Coppertone or Banana Boat, but I have seen some vineyards use a white sun screen cloth. Made sense, just think abut the fabric and color of your car seats.

Sorta like shade tobacco. The screens also help keep out birds that want to eat the grapes. I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to use such screens in the AOC regions of France.

Paul, your response might have been specific to Dan's comment, but if you didn't read the article the screen referenced in the article is a spray-on clay.
