GrapeCollective: Wurttemberg's Jochen Beurer

by TomHill » Tue Mar 19, 2019 10:03 am

As linked in WineTerroirist, there's a very interesting article in GrapeCollective:
Beurer/Wurttemberg
about Jochen Beurer in SW Germany's Wurttemberg region and how he is almost single-handedly making a reputation for "Trolinger Country".

It's been yrs since I've had a wine from Wurttemberg. Anybody tried any of the Beurer wines? I would particularly like to try his Trollinger since I generally like the Schiavas from Sudtirol.

Anyway...a very interesting read.

I'm a big fan of the wines, at least the rieslings. I don't think I've tasted any other grapes. I also don't have much context on the broader region so not clear how unique they are in comparison to local producers (although others claim they are quite singular).

Regardless, I like the clarity, precision, focus and freshness. Sometimes I think of them as the German riesling version of Muscadet, but with more depth than the average Muscadet.

I've only had one (2015 Weingut Beurer Stettener Kieselsandstein Riesling trocken). It was very impressive texturally but had an overwhelming amount of sponti in the nose and on the palate.

I do have another bottle (the Schilfsandstein) left in the cellar, but not exactly excited about it after the first one.

And yes I have major challenges with sponti. :D

Yes, life is not always easy. I've also gotten a fair amount of reduction on the screwcap wines.

But it's worth sorting out in my view.
