WT3Nights: The Onus was in Us (Not on Us)

Onus Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi, 2010.

Overall, a varietally correct wine that has aged nicely. Aromas are dark fruit dominant: black currant, blackberry. Hints of plum, dust, vanilla, clove, eucalyptus and mint. Faint black pepper. On the palate, flavors are similar but the aroma is definitely stronger than palate impact. Smooth texture, medium plus body and finish. The wine stayed essentially the same over 3 days, which added to complexity of experience. At $25 with tax & shipping, QPR is average. Drink now or in 2021. Pair with beef dishes for sure. Not surprising: I can't find evidence that Onus produced beyond the 2012 vintage. But since Lodi is known for Zin and Cab I'm sure there are others out there to explore in the $30 and below range.

Where I live now we don't see many Lodi wines, but when I lived in California the few I tried didn't work for me. Very full-bodied with saturated flavors, and usually bumping the ceiling in terms of alcohol. Not the case here?

Label says 15% alcohol. I wouldn't describe as full-bodied nor saturated. Maybe when it was younger, but not my impression. YMMV. And vanilla not in-your-face.

There are some producers making Lodi wines that are not so flammable, notably Sandlands.
