WTN: like from another planet ..

by rainer.volz » Sat Nov 07, 2020 10:51 am

2005 Château Saint-Pierre (St. Julien), Bordeaux/France
(red Bordeaux blend)
Dull nose after opening, the scent is strongly characterized by oak-induced tannin. It opens up with airing, shows a shy, plum-like fruit (driven by its share of Merlot), still lots of wood, little acidity (therefore lactic), noticeable alcohol, from time to time slightly oxidative notes (that come and go). Certainly solid quality with enough substance for further bottle aging but kind of boring from my point of view. I actually like Bordeaux but this is not my preferred style, I wanted more freshness, energy, palatable minerality and fruit. - My subjective rating: 88+/100.

Like from another planet:
2015 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Bianca (White Label), Piedmont/Italy
(100% Nebbiolo)
Strikingly light color (even for a traditionally made Nebbiolo wine). Subtle scent of red cherries, dried tomatoes and dark roses mixed with cinnamon, anise, minerals and fine herbs. There is tons of energy and life in this tempting juice! Strong structure on the palate (mouth cleansing) with tight tannins, dominant minerality, refreshing precise acidity and complex sweet fruit. Long finish. Appears very old-fashioned and robust. Improves with airing, becomes more open, sweeter, gains expression and depth. Every sip is fun and brings new insights. Promising future. Tastes like a theoretical Barbaresco produced by Gianfranco Soldera. - My subjective rating: 93+/100.

Cheers, Rainer

Ferrando is consistently lovely. Pricing in the USA has exceeded some very fine Barbaresco (e.g. Produttori and Sottimano), which has left me looking elsewhere for non-Barbaresco Nebbiolo.

Prices are an ugly topic. Here in Switzerland I find all wines from Piedmont overpriced apart from Produttori del Barbaresco. It is kind of accepted because comparable wines from Burgundy cost even more. Funnily, top Pinot Noir from the Western part of Switzerland can be a good alternative - despite very high labour cost here.

I am sampling some Cantina dei Produttori Carema wines. They seem to be good values so far.

From the frugal corner, we've had a few Langhe DOC Nebs that were decent. They are no Barolo, but we just like the grape so much. Certainly better than the few domestics we've sampled. Our LWS is currently featuring:

Fratelli Alessandria 2018 Prinsiot Nebbiolo, Langhe

About $24. If we needed wine, I'd consider it.

I can always recommend Roagna's "Langhe rosso" (a de-classified single vineyard Barbaresco). Its availability is limited, but the price is fair: around USD 35 (in Switzerland).

Vietti Perbaco is well worth considering.

Definitely on Perbacco. Also Vietti Barbera, Barbera d' Asti Tre Vigne if open to Barbera. Most usually cheaper than the Perbacco as I'd expect.
