2017 Sandlands Mataro San Benito County - USA, California, Central Coast, San Benito County (10/22/2022)Opened and immediately poured a glass, so no decant, no air time. One of the most immediately open Sandlands wines I can recall. Lots of deep red fruit, a bit of roasted earth and some herbal and spice accents. On the palate it’s also fleshier than most Sandlands bottles I have tried over the years. Makes for a good balance with the fresh acidity. I like this a lot right now.

Any intel on why they're choosing the less-commonly known name 'Mataro'?

It’s quite common for the California guys. Ridge uses it. Joel Peterson uses it for his Once & Future label. Several others do as well. So it’s “old school.”

Makes sense. Ridge, of course, I knew about, but was unaware of others.
