WTN: Two New Bedrock Reds....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Dec 20, 2023 4:04 pm

We tried last week at Pig+Fig:
1. Bedrock Ode to Lucien RW (14.5%; Plntd before 1900) 2021: Verry dark/near black color; very intense Mourv/plummy/boysenberry/chocolaty/licorice/very ripe quite dusty/OV strong toasty/oak rather earthy quite complex bit Bandol-like beautiful nose; bit soft/porky very rich/lush intense chocolaty/plummy/Mourv/bit licorice rather toasty/oak quite dusty/OV rather complex powerful flavor w/ ample soft tannins; very long/lingering ripe/soft finish that mimics flavor; a bit lacking in structure but pretty intense lush/ripe/rich Mourvedre that should age well; a lovely OV Mourv. $46.00

2. Bedrock EvangelhoVnyd Heritage ContraCostaCnty RW (14.5%; Own rooted vines plntd in 1890's) 2022: Very dark color; very strong plummy/Mourv/licorice/grapey quite dusty/OV some toasty/oak fairly complex lovely nose; bit soft quite rich/lush strong plummy/Mourv/licorice/boysenberry/ripe bit grapey/spicy strong CCCnty/earthy/loamy/mushroomy light toasty/oak fairly structured rather complex flavor w/ ample ripe tannins; very long ripe/plummy finish that follows the flavor; speaks strongly of CCCnty OV red; should age into a wonderful OV red in a few yrs. $42.00

More quirkafrig from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The Ode to Lucien (Peyraud) is mostly from the OV block of Mourvedre at the Bedrock Vnyd.
The Evangelho is a field-blend of Zinfandel/Carignane/Mourvedre, and others. Planted on own-roots in very sandy soil. The vnyd is now owned/farmed by Bedrock. Morgan claims that wines from have the lowest pH of any of the wines they make. But it always has a sort of softness on the palate and we taste acidity in wine based on the TA rather than pH.

Evangelho is my favorite Bedrock wine. Lucien is in my top 5.
