Viognier…WTF

I opened a Peay Vineyards Viognier tonight (do not ask why I bought it, as I really don’t know), and it smells like a new Bounce dryer sheet!

I’ve had a very few deliciously interesting Viogniers, but generally I wonder why anyone wants their wine to smell like laundry.

Fresh Linen, Sweet Dreams, Paradise Blossom, or Outdoor Fresh? Be specific, man!

(Yes, I had to look that up. I don’t want my laundry to smell any of those things either.)

Dryer sheets would be a big improvement over the smell of dead old ladies, which is what I find in most new world viogniers!

I've never used Bounce so I don't know what odor you're talking about. I don't have much experience with new world viognier. I adore Condrieu but it's hard to find around here and when you do find it it's expensive. Two inexpensive new world viogniers that I like are Y by Yalumba (Austraila) and Cline (Sonoma). Both have flowery aromas, peonies in particular, Y has a touch of oak as well. Of the two, I prefer Cline.

Long time lurker here. Curious as to how you know what dead old ladies smell like. Do you keep a few in that freezer in your avatar?

Mike, nice of you to come out of hibernation. But actually, "dead old ladies" is a descriptor well earned. It's the smell of the nursing home my grandmother lived in for a few years: 9 out of 10 residents were female and it smelled of lavender sachets, cheap perfumey lotions and piles of Kleenex. Believe me, it's all in there!

My mother-in-law's assisted living apartment reeks of them. She adores the aroma. I loathe it.

Not a big viognier fan. Occasionally- but only occasionally- a Condrieu appeals.
