Hard to determine exactly what happened here. But if I understand correctly, power was turned off for 3 weeks in Sept in upstate NY. I’m having trouble imagining that temps would get so high in a interior “wine closet” to ruin the wine, should be lots of thermal mass there. I just looked at weather for Sept 2023 in Windham, highest temp (1 day) 79, most days highs in 60s/low 70s

Yup - ski chalet and $750 average value bottles do indicate a 'show' cellar. I wonder if the wines were really damaged but then again this was in September, which can still be pretty warm. OTOH, a properly constructed cellar has not only a cooling system but also a well insulated space and as the guy in question doesn't seem to have been short a bob or two and was in the construction business, one can assume proper insulation (I think Dale's analysis is on point) and there might even be a defence of contributory negligence if the owner failed to have a monitored security system at the house, including the wine cellar. (I have closed cell spray foam on all walls, floor and ceiling to R 20 and a construction executive would surely have done something similar, and the wine should survive 3 weeks without additional refrigeration but I don't know what the situation was at that guy's place.

In any case, it sounds like a claim by the guy against his insurance policy and that they would claim indemnity from the ex-wife.
