Have we set a time for the Airing of Grievances, or does it just evolve naturally?

Even though I live half my life with my nose buried in one dictionary or another, I’d never bothered to think about the difference between “Happy” and “Merry” until now (or if I did, I’d forgotten about it). Etymologically, “happy” has to do more with enjoying good luck or fortune or prosperity, while “merry,” a cousin of “mirth,” suggests the enjoyment of a rollicking party quite apart from the question of whether the fates are smiling on you or not. (I guess it’s basically the same as the difference between “glücklich” and “frölich” in German.) So while I hope everyone enjoys holidays, feste, fêtes, Feiertage, feestdagen, helg, and juhlakautta that are both happy AND merry, if I’m limited to one, I’m voting for merriment. :-)
cheers, Patchen

This is the Internet. It’s nothing but an airing of grievances.
