1. I am very fond of SauvBlancs from the Sudstiermark. And from Friuli & Slovenia. Schauer is a producer I'd not heard of before. From their WebSite, it appears they make a full range of SauvBlanc from the area. I would very much like to try more of them. They are imported into the USofA by The Sorting Table, an importer who has an absolute stunning portfolio of producers. Out of Napa.
Susan took me to Horno restaurant for my BD & this unknown wine caught my eye. I was very much impressed by it. Alas, David Sellers had bought the entire lot from the distributor, so not available at retail here in NM. The $90 price is off David's reserve list. It would normally retail around $30, which makes it a very good value.
I love visiting the Sudstiermark. Fairly steep/rolling hills. Beautiful countryside. I really like their scarecrows they use to frighten off the bird predators. They are called "klapotetz", for rattler. They are usually made from wood, make a annoying clattering noise, and some are quite artistic. Would love to find some in this country. I would install in my front yard and it would annoy my neighbors no end...some of whom deserve it.
It fun to drive the Weinstrausse which follows the border w/ Slovenia, crossing the border in several places. You can still see some of the guard towers on the Yugoslavia side, remnants from the rule of Marshall Tito during the Cold War. The nearby town of Graz is a beautiful place to visit.
Anyway, one of my favorite area in Europe & Austria.
