WTN: Sattlerhof SauvBlanc Auslese Sudsteiermark '21...(short

by TomHill » Wed Jan 15, 2025 1:24 pm

Tried this dessert wine last night w/ my pears in mascarpone:
1. Sattlerhof SauvBlanc Auslese Sudsteiermark Austria (11.5%; sweet; LN 14342/22; www.Sattlerhof.At; VineyardBrands/Birmingham) Weingut Sattlerhof/Gamlitz 2021: Med.dark gold color; slight plasticizer/new car strong peach/pear bit herbal/SB slight botrytis quite ripe some interesting nose; rather soft quite sweet ripe/SB/peach/pear bit botrytis/pear bit interesting flavor; long fairly sweet ripe pear finish that tracks the flavor; certainly an Auslese level in sweetness but speaks little of SB & little botrytis; a pleasant mild-mannered dessert wine that lacks a bit of interest; overpriced at $48.00/hlf (SFW&S)

1. I'm a big fan for the SBs from Sudsteiermark in Austria. Some of the best expressions of that grape in the World. So I was excited to stumble on this Auslee level SB. It was quite a pleasant dessert wine but just seemed to be lacking a bit in characteror and distinctiveness.

Don't think I've ever had an Austrian SB! When I think of Austria I generally think Gruner or riesling - I had a fair bit of Morandell wines go through my cellar but we don't see much any more in this market.

An auslese SB would be a great one in a blind tasting!

Bill,
I really like the Sudsteiermark Austrian SBs. The seldom have the herbal character you often get in SB. Sort of a Chard expression of SB. The remind me a lot of the ones from Friuli & Slovenia. They are not that scarce & worth tracking down some to try.

Sattlerhof is a generally uninteresting producer.
