- 2023 Carl Loewen Longuicher Maximin Herrenberg Riesling Trocken Alte Reben “1896” - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/1/2025)
I got into Riesling years ago drinking the Carl Schmitt-Wagner Kabinett and Spätlese from this site, both of which were <$20 then (and affordable even by college or grad student standards). Still have a very soft spot for the Schmitt-Wagner wines and this site, but now this vineyard is in Carl Loewen's hands following Bruno Schmitt-Wagner's retirement. So, grabbed this bottle recently and was curious to see what Loewen's making with it.
This is outstanding Riesling, easily the most enjoyable Mosel trocken I've had. Tart citrus and green apple fruit, fresh herbal and lightly floral notes, and a slatey mineral undercurrent all come together seamlessly in a fragrant, lightweight package. There's enough weight and richness to the fruit on the palate that it never once feels austere or lean (something I often find in a lot of MSR trockens) and it feels remains remarkably light and delicate on the palate with bright acidity, while finishing with impressive length. Terrific and I'll have to buy more.

Glad you enjoyed it. That site is special. Happy it ended up with someone like Loewen rather than a Loosen type situation.
