BR: Behind The Barrels: The Women of Ridge

by TomHill » Wed Feb 12, 2025 10:45 am

Thanks to Christina Doneley for sending me a copy of this book. "Behind The Barrels: The Women of Ridge" by Sue Crane.
This is a collection of Remembrances by Sue Crane of the Women who were involved in the early days of Ridge, mostly the 3 wives of the 4 founders. Lots of old pics from back in the '60-'70 yrs at Ridge. Great pics of their kids working at Ridge during harvest. For those of you familiar w/ the early history of Ridge, this gives a fascinating history of those early days told from a different perspective. Highly recommended.
This is a self-published book from Sue, so not available on Amazon or elsewhere. Only available from Ridge Vnyds by direct sale.

Cool! Thanks, Tom. BTW, did you know any of those 4 founders? They were all SRI researchers, no? By the time I discovered Ridge, only Dave Bennion remained involved and I never got a chance to meet him.

I knew Dave Bennion by far the best. I met Hew Crane & Charlie Rosen briefly at several Ridge events. Met up w/ Dave probably a dozen times. Never met Howie that I know of.
They were all SRI researchers. I believe it was Hew Crane who developed the technique to send bank checks via electronics/telephone lines. Before the InterNet. Dave worked at LosAlamos over several Summers. I also knew fairly well Fran Bennion. She was a frequent visitor to SantaFe since her roommate at Stanford was the wife of a good friend of mine. Their daughter, Krista Bennion Feeney, is a world-class Violist back East somewhere.
I, of course, have stories.....some of them may even be true!!
