WTN: Wines We Love ('22 Extradimensional Mind Left Body)

by Mark Lipton » Thu Feb 27, 2025 3:28 pm

Last night was pizza night chez nous. Because our tastes run to NYC-style pizza, a style which is completely unavailable here in flyover country, I have spent the past 4-5 years developing the best home-cooked pizzas I can. What this means is a cold-fermented dough for me and a gluten-free cold-fermented dough for my wife Jean. I am not so OCD as to have jerry-rigged the cleaning cycle of our electric oven but instead cook them at 550 F on a baking stone.

Our choice of pizza wine with this meal was the 2022 Mind Left Body Mourvedre from Hardy Wallace's Extradimensional Wine Company Yeah!, a blend of 75% Evangelho Mourvedre, 15% Del Barba Carignane and 10% skin-fermented Chardonnay. When we first tasted this in the tasting room when on sabbatical last Spring it rocked our world. Now, 10 months later, it is still the fantastic red-fruited, medium-bodied super-quaffable wine that it has always been. Although Jean has been trying to limit her work-week consumption, a nod to our advancing age, this wine proves too attractive for moderation. Together with a new episode of Apple TV's Prime Target, it made for a welcome relief from the madness that has engulfed our professional lives.

You guys have me feeling so left out. I've put my local retailer on the hunt for this producer. May not even be in our distribution system, but one can hope.

Picking up on a conversation from one year ago, but: yes they do and my first shipment landed about two weeks ago. I'm dying to open something. What did I get? A pick-six variety of '22s in which they did the picking--but you know what impressed me most? The alcohol levels. Lowest 12.75, highest 13.5 (and no surprise, it's a syrah).

This is what they sent. There are, strangely, two of the Agradezco, all others 1 each. Hopefully no duds, but if there's one you think is that, don't hesitate to say so.

No duds in that group. Might as well try an Agradezco since you got two. Put it in a decanter for a couple of hours then get some carnitas.

Good! I was especially happy about getting one with a high percentage of mourvedre, and of course an Evangelho.

The Evangelho Carignan is going to be a brighter (!) wine than the typical Evangelho Mourvèdre. I am not much of a Carignan fan, so I sometimes skip it, but it does have a degree of that sapiness that the Mourvèdre shows.

I have not had much straight carignane--maybe only 3 or 4 in my lifetime, one of which was made in Wisconsin where it's a very popular grape for some reason and bore no resemblance to the one very good one (Neyers, Sonoma) I had.
