WTN: Roty, Banfi, Defaix, Goodfellow, Baudry

Beef ribeye bulgogi, sweet potatoes with miso butter, green beans with kimchi
2012 Roty Gevrey Chambertin
Black cherry and plum, coffee, soil tones. With some time meaty notes and some spice. Nicely balanced acids, gentle tannins. Very good for village Gevrey. B+

Salmon, farro, spinach
2009 Banfi Belnero (Toscano IGT)
My version of David’s Dad Crypt is wines that are part of a mixed lot. A lot with some interesting Chianti also included 4 bottles of Banfi (BdM, RdM, CCR, and this). Turned out it was a Banfi wooden gift box with glass lid. The sticker for this wine (which I had never heard of) said “90 Pts Wine Enthusiast, A terroir-driven fruit forward Sangiovese” Let’s see. Well the good news is that it’s not tired. The bad news is this is hard, hot, tannic, and torrid. Black fruits, oaky. Hard to believe it’s Sangiovese, and in fact back label says “A cuvee of red wine varieties perfected by our pioneering winemaking research. This tastes more like Napa Cab than Sangiovese. 14%, tastes hotter. C/C+

2023 Baudry Chinon Rose
Quiet and restrained (in a good way), red fruits and minty herbs, whew. B+/B

Oysters, lemon sole, farro, Brussels sprouts with rhubarb tamari, bok choy
2017 Goodfellow Durant Chardonnay
I can catch a hint of matchstick because I’m looking for it, but not a lot of reduction here. Pear and nectarine, nice stony/mineral finish, good acids. With time a grapefruit zest note. B+/A-

Crab cake sweet potato, salad
2005 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Cote De Lechet Chablis 1er
Green apple, lemon, some hazelnut/honey notes showing the age and the vintage ripeness, not especially minerally but tasty. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Banfi has been a sad tale for too long.

Your Goodfellow note has me thinking about opening a 2017. I buried mine due to extreme reduction when I first tried them.

So I made a mistake. It was the 2010 Banfi RdM from gift set that was 14%. This was 15%(and it showed)

The Baudry Chinon (from the last area Henry II saw - I visited his tomb at Fontevraud Abbey) is a decent tipple, but drinking a 2023 might be a touch on the premature side. I have some of the 2017 Baudry Les Granges Chinon that I'll put on my 'try soon' list though.

oops, edited, I left off rose from Baudry! I wanted something light to get the Banfi out of my mouth.

Baudry ages well (2005 Grezeaux is da bomb at moment) but Granges is their youngest vines cuvee that they consider "drink now" so I think 2017 will be drinking fine.
