WTN: Penfolds Hearts

  • 1998 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri - Australia, South Australia (4/12/2025)
From my late father's cellar, this bottle was in perfect condition. The only thing that betrayed the 27 years of age was that the tannins had largely melted away. There was still enough for structure, but beyond that it was silky, still quite fruity, and perfectly balanced. Small accents of leather, roasted game, and wood smoke added complexity, and the wine carried a lot of depth while only being mid-weight. Beautiful and elegant - wish I had a cellar full of this, but sadly the only bottle.

p.s. title is a bit of an Odd Job.

Quite a few Aussie wines don't drink well without a few years on them to shed the rough tannins and often excessive sweetness. That bottle sounds like it was lovely. I have a single bottle of 2000 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz - After reading your review I pulled it out and it is standing up in the cellar, destined for near term sampling!

I will be very interested in how your wine shows. Really wish I had bought a lot of 1990s Penfolds.

I bought quite a bit, but I also belonged to an Australian wine club so I consumed a fair bit of it back in the day. Aside from the one Kalimna, I only have a short vertical (1991-94 Bin 707) and a half case of 2000 Bin 389 which I better get into soon!

Bin 389 was a great bargain, but yeah, time to check in.

Bin 389 sells here for $100 Can. a bottle now! It is the 2021 but I won't be buying any at that price!

Thank you for the note. I have 2 bottles of the '98 St. Henri. It seems the last time I had one was nearly 20 years ago! Time to revisit. The first time I bought a full case of wine was the '98 Bin 389. Still have 2 bottles which I really should consume. The last time I had one 5 years ago it was starting to fade.

The St. Henri is my favorite in the Penfolds stable. Wish I still had some.
