Last week I forgot the 2023 Steinmetz Piesporter Treppchen “GG” Riesling
I think this is labeled GG because it’s in a Grosses Gewachs style, but not actually a Grosses Gewachs as he is not part of the association. Peachy, dry, solid acids, fun.B/B+
Thursday with Betsy out of town I gathered a few friends for a Hudson Valley Restaurant week visit to Saint George in Hastings. Th is free BYO, so I brought the wines.
I started with a great asparagus soup
2017 Chandon de Briailles “Îles de Vergelesses” Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc 1er
Fresh and young, pear, green apple, lemon, and a light marzipan note, long minerally finish with a touch of citrus zest. A-/B+
I had the navarin d’agneau, quite good (baby turnips and pearl onions)
1970 Ch. Rouget (Pomerol)
Black plum, coffee, and smoke. Plush low acid texture, not the longest or most complex ‘70 Pomerol, but good showing from a 55 year old 3rd tier Pomerol. I’m quite happy with the showing. B//B+
Teriyaki salmon, rice with furikake and nori, spinach
2014 Goodfellow Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
I’ve generally been more of a GF Chard guy than the PNs, but this is really quite good. Tart cranberry and cherry, smoke, and herbs. Light in a bright fresh style. B+
Roast Green Goddess chicken, sweet potato, and salad
2020 Arnaud Lambert Montee Des Roches Saumur Champigny
I’m a Lambert fan but this doesn’t excite me, black plum fruit with a green pepper and horse patty overlay. Gets better with air, but won’t be looking for more of this. B-
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
